What Osteopaths do
Although osteopaths treat many conditions, most people think of us as ‘back specialists’. Back pain is what many osteopaths treat a lot of the time. Osteopathic treatment does not target symptoms only but treats the parts of the body that have caused the symptoms. Osteopaths have a holistic approach and believe that your whole body will work well if your body is in good structural balance. Osteopaths and Chiropractors are very similar in their approach.
Meghan Carolan has also completed her post graduate certification in specialist paediatric osteopathic practice and is able to treat babies, children and pregnant ladies. Ginelle Kay is currently on maternity leave.
We are just up the A10 from Ware and Hertford and 10 minutes from Royston.
Conditions we treat
The most common conditions that we treat are:
- back and neck pain
- shoulder and arm problems
- pelvis, hip and leg problems
- sports and other injuries
However, patients have found osteopathy helpful for many other conditions. Why not book a 15 minute free chat and see if we can help?

The Osteopathic Centre for Children explain that Paediatric Osteopathy
”is the specialism of using gentle osteopathic techniques specifically for treating babies, children, teens and perinatal mums. Variety of osteopathic techniques are used, that are gentle enough for babies and children, providing treatment that’s as individual as the patient. In young patients, the methods used are nearly always very gentle, but nonetheless powerful, requiring specialist skill and knowledge”.
Your medical history
Before we start to treat you, we will make a full medical assessment. We take time to listen to you and ask questions to make sure we understand your medical history and your day-to-day routine. We’ll ask you about things like diet, exercise and what is happening in your life, as these may give clues to help our diagnosis. We may feel your pulse and check your reflexes. We may also take your blood pressure and refer you for clinical tests, such as x-rays, if we think you need them.
Your posture
We usually look at your posture and how you move your body. We may also assess what happens when we move it for you and see what hurts, where and when.
Trouble areas
Using touch, we may also find the areas which are sensitive or tight and this helps us to identify what’s going on.
When we have done this, we can diagnose your condition. We may sometimes feel that osteopathy is not appropriate for you and refer you to your GP or another specialist such as an orthopaedic surgeon.
Your treatment
Osteopaths use a wide range of gentle manipulations, depending on your age, fitness and diagnosis.
Treatment is different for every patient but may include techniques such as different types of soft tissue massage and joint articulation to release tension, stretch muscles, help relieve pain and mobilise your joints. Sometimes, when we move joints you may hear a ‘click’. This is just like the click people get when they crack their knuckles.
We may discuss exercises that you can do to improve your posture and movement in your workplace and everyday life.

What's the difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath?
Chiropractors and Osteopaths are similar in a lot of ways but they do have some differences too.
Osteopaths philosophy revolves around the blood and they take a whole body approach to treatment.
One of our Osteopaths Meghan has also completed extra training in Paediatric Osteopathy.
Chiropractors on the whole tend to use more gadgets and have a bench which has drop pieces and flexion/distraction.
If you are wondering who would be best to see why not book a Free 15 minute chat and the practitioner can help you decide who would be best to see.
Do I need a GP Referral to see an Osteopath?
As Osteopaths are primary health practitioners you don’t need to see your GP before seeing an Osteopath. If you have private health cover it is worth checking with your provider however as some still require a referral from a GP.
With your permission we can write to your GP to keep them up to date about your care.
